Bigger barrels don't mean better flavour. The proof is Laphroaig Quarter Cask, inspired by the old tradition of transporting whisky on packhorses. Fortunately for said horses, it was stored in smaller quarter casks that carry flavour into your dram today. Their reduced size means the spirit has more contact with the wood, amplifying the natural flavours of whisky first matured in ex-Bourbon barrels. Oban is one of Scotland's oldest and smallest distilleries. Founded in 1794, the West Highland port town of the same name has grown around the distillery.
